I. Professional Yoga Therapist  Training Program overview and module 1
The Professional Yoga Therapist Program is a complete professional training program in Yoga Therapy, certifying participants both to work with therapeutic groups and to develop a private Yoga Therapy practice. Through this course you will learn how to design and teach Yoga programs for groups and individuals with specific needs and specific health challenges. You will also develop an in-depth understanding of the philosophy, theory, process and application of Yoga Therapy.

This in-depth understanding will allow you to work in complementary settings such as health care, to develop Yoga based wellness programs for specific groups such as cardiac care and cancer, as well as develop a private Yoga Therapy practice. This program is available at two levels: The first level is a 500-hour certification approved by the Yoga Alliance. The second level is a 1000-hour certificate program

The 500-hour level Professional Yoga Therapist Certification has 3 components:
I. Module 1– The foundation module with a focus on therapeutic groups
II. Module 2 – The In-depth practice module with a focus on individual sessions
III. One-week Specialization Program in an area of interest – This week can also credited by teaching an eight-week therapeutic program in your own community with accompanying written work. The IYT home study also serves as credit.
IV. The 1000-hour level Professional Yoga Therapist Certification has an additional 1 to 2 year internship program, completed in your own community.

Entry requirements: The Professional Yoga Therapist Training Program is for those who are already Yoga teachers or therapists / body workers with a strong foundation in Yoga. It is not necessary to have completed your basic level teacher training  (200 hours) before entering the program. However, you must complete it before receiving your 500 or 1000-hour certificate.

I. Professional Yoga Therapist Training Program - Module 1
This Two-week Intensive Program forms the foundation of the PYT Program. Its focus is the theory and vision of Yoga therapy and the application of Yoga therapy for specific focus groups.

Module 1 of the PYT training program includes:
• Specific Yoga practices, including asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha, meditation and Yoga Nidra, along with their benefits and contraindications for each system of the body and for the most common health conditions.
• The use of asana in healing musculoskeletal injuries through an in-depth study of kinesiology and understanding the effects of asana in strengthening, stabilizing and creating flexibility in every joint of the body. This study includes modifications and use of props for all asana categories.
• Evaluation skills and techniques for assessing imbalance at the physical, energetic, psychological, and spiritual levels including assessment of the joints, the breath, the chakras and the subtle body.
• Movement techniques for developing strength and flexibility, including Somatics, PNF, hands-on assisted stretching, and the use of the Theraband.
• Introduction to the essential principles of Ayurveda in relation to Yoga therapy including a study of the five element system and a full range of Yoga techniques to balance each element and dosha. 
• In-depth exploration of the energy body, including the prana vayus, chakras and nadis, along with pranayama, and mudra, to address common health conditions.
• Practical tools and techniques for supporting clients at the psycho-emotional level, including stress management, relaxation, concentration, meditation, and Yoga Nidra
• Yoga-based awareness methods such as body mapping, mandala drawing, and guided imagery-for unlocking doors to healing.

Tuition includes a 300 page Yoga Therapy Manual.

II. Professional Yoga Therapist Training Program - Module 2

This Two-week Intensive Training Program focuses on in-depth practice of Yoga therapy for the needs of the individual in the context of developing a private Yoga Therapy practice.

Module2 of the PYT training program includes:

  • A variety of formats for evaluation and body reading at physical, energetic, and psycho-emotional levels providing in-depth information from which the Yoga Therapist can respond with appropriate Yoga practices for optimal healing
  • Expanding the ability to choose and adapt Yoga Therapy tools and techniques to provide a complete therapeutic practice for each individual that includes asana, pranayama, mudra, affirmation, meditation and Yoga Nidra
  • Practice in developing and implementing complete Yoga Therapy programs directed toward the most common health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes type II, arthritis and back pain
  • Therapeutic sequences that apply the principles of Ayurveda in Yoga Therapy
  • Therapeutic sequences to balance the subtle body including pranavayus and chakras
  • Listening and dialogue skills to assist in opening clients to their own resources of inner healing
  • Workshops on specific health conditions with individuals who have used Yoga in their healing journeys.

Note:  Module 2 is open to those who have completed Module 1 or are experienced Yoga teachers (at least three years) with some therapeutic experience. All students must complete Module 1 and 2 as well as the one-week specialization before being certified as an IYT Yoga Therapist.

III. Professional Yoga Therapist Training Program - Module 3

The One-week Specialization Programs are open to all Yoga students with an interest in deepening their understanding and experience of Yoga.

Module 3 of the PYT training program includes:
IYT offers a series of one-week specialization programs taught by Joseph and Lilian Le Page and the IYT faculty. These programs include:

  1. Pranayama, Mudra and Pranic Healing: includes all the essentials of working with the energy body using breath and mudra in an experiential format with a focus on healing.

  2. Multidimensional Asana: an exploration of the practice and effects of asana at all levels of being with a focus on integrating physical, energetic, psycho-emotional and spiritual aspects of the person to unfold the full potential of asana practice.
  3. Chakra Therapy: Explores each of the 7 main chakras as well as the qualities of each of the fifty petals that comprise the secondary chakra system with a focus on health and healing.
  4. Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Explores the sutras in details experientially using all of the elements of Yoga practice including asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha, meditation and Yoga Nidra.
  5. The Essence of Yoga: Explores the concept of Yoga as elaborated in the Bhagavad Gita pointing to liberation as the essence of all therapeutic and spiritual practices. Uses key verses from the Gita to unfold this vision of Yoga, supported by extensive asana, pranayama, mudra and meditation practice.
  6. Meditation and Yoga Nidra: Teaches a variety of meditation techniques as well as in-depth study and practice of Yoga Nidra with a focus on health and healing including a study of the physiology of meditation.
  7. Yoga for Children: This program gives Yoga teachers and Yoga therapists in-depth skills for teaching to children with a special focus on therapeutic aspects. Beth Gibbs, MA, the director of this program has extensive experience in this area.

IV. Professional Yoga Therapist Training Program - Module 4

One Thousand-hour Level Certificate Program – to receive this certificate, you must complete all the requirements at the five hundred- hour level, and in addition must complete the 10 modules of the Professional Yoga Therapist Internship program that requires one to two years of directed study in your own community with a distance-learning mentor

Module 4 of the PYT training program includes:
The Professional Yoga Therapist Internship Program is the foundation for the one thousand-hour Yoga Therapist Certification. This internship is a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years in length. It consists of a total of thirty individual sessions, teaching of one eight-week therapeutic Yoga program and study and completion of ten modules of written work focused on particular themes or aspects of Yoga Therapy. The internship program is a distance-learning program that includes monthly phone check-ins with a mentor as well as regular e-mail communication of your session reports. Your mentor will closely follow your progress and support your development in all areas of one-on-one and group work. Your session reports can be sent automatically to your mentor through facilities within the IYT website. Each of the ten modules of written work has a specific focus and theme. Each module is accompanied by a package of background information and suggested reading. The Internship module themes are:
 1. Interviewing, Assessing and Creating a Safe Space- Learning how to communicate with your client and create a safe space which allows them to discover within themselves the healing potential of Yoga. This chapter includes use of client interview forms, body mapping and communication skills.
2. Designing Programs for Specific Conditions- Program design both for therapeutic groups and individuals is a key foundation of Yoga Therapy. This module allows you to deepen the practice of the therapeutic formats introduced in the five hundred-hour training.
3. Assessing and Healing with Breath and Energy- Using pranayama and related breathing techniques, along with mudra and prana vidya as therapeutic modalities. This chapter includes breath assessment skills.
4. Assessing the Physical Body and Modifying Poses for the Individual- Understanding the mechanics of movement and how to prescribe specific Yoga postures for specific Yoga movement needs. This module includes a Yoga sequence for assessing range of motion as well as stretching and movement modalities including Somatics to facilitate freedom of movement for the client.
5. Ayurvedic Assessment and Program Development- This module focuses on how to evaluate the basic ayurvedic constitution and possible imbalances and create effective programs of Yoga Therapy based on the needs of the individual. This module also includes ayurvedic assessment forms and extensive information on Yoga for balancing the five elements.
6. The Chakras as a Key to Health- Focuses on the subtle body and how to use this understanding in supporting the client in a health, healing and awakening process. This chapter includes methodology for chakra assessment and balancing including therapeutic sequences for each of the chakras encompassing all aspects of Yoga practice.
7. Relaxation and Yoga Nidra- Explores the stress response in detail and the use of relaxation techniques with a focus on Yoga Nidra .
8. Mediation as a Healing Art- Explores a wide range of meditation techniques for health, healing and awakening including the physiology of meditation.
9. Yoga Psychology as the Foundation of Yoga Therapy Sessions- The Yoga Sutras form the theoretical and practical foundation of Yoga Therapy. This chapter includes the study of the key texts of Yoga with a focus on health and healing. This module includes the Yoga Sutras, the texts of Hatha Yoga, and the Bhagavad Gita, exploring their perspectives on health and healing.
10. Yoga Therapy in the modern world- Includes professional ethics, marketing, public relations and the promotion of Yoga Therapy as a developing profession in mainstream society including contacts with clinics, hospitals, research organizations and Yoga Therapy associations.

V. Yoga Teacher Training Program

The Therapeutic Yoga Teacher Program is for those who want to teach Yoga as a healing art. You will learn to teach Yoga for a wide range of complementary settings including health care as well as Yoga classes for the general public. This program is open to anyone with a basic foundation in Yoga and is especially suitable for body-workers, health care professionals and all therapists. This program is registered with the Yoga Alliance as a basic 200-hour Teacher Training certification program (RYT-200).

The Integrative Yoga Therapy Teacher Training program gives students in-depth skills to teach Yoga as a vehicle for total wellness. Along with offering Yoga classes with a focus on health and healing to the general public, IYT graduates teach Yoga-based wellness programs in a wide variety of complementary settings including hospitals, businesses, and complementary health care settings. IYT teachers also develop special focus programs, such as Yoga for back care, depression, seniors, stress management, and many other health conditions. The two-week intensive training is completed by taking a one-week module selected from a variety of week-long IYT specialization programs to complete the approved 200 hour Yoga teacher certification program by the Yoga Alliance.

VI. Yoga Home Study Program

The Yoga Home Study Program is a complete course in Yoga with a special focus on the therapeutic dimension. The course includes Yoga philosophy and psychology, asana, pranayama and mudra as well as an in-depth experiential study of how to apply the psychology of yoga in daily living. This is a web-based program in which each student works with a personal mentor through e-mail and our interactive Website. It is available to all students throughout the world with an interest in deepening their understanding of Yoga.
